United Kingdom. Air Force Cross (AFC) of 1945, reign of George VI. With original case.

The Air Force Cross is a British military award for aviators, both from the Royal Air Force and from the rest of the British Armed Forces, such as aviation attached to the Royal Navy. It was awarded for “an act or acts of exemplary gallantry while flying, though not in active operations against the enemy”. During World War II only 2,605 AFCs were awarded to RAF pilots.

Medal made of silver. On the obverse, in the center is Hermes riding on the wings of a falcon holding a laurel wreath and, on each arm of the medal, four helices inscribed “G VI R I” (George VI Rex Imperator). On the reverse, the royal cipher “GRI 1918” (George VI Rex Imperator and the year of establishment 1918) and in the lower part the year of issue of this medal: 1945.
