United Kingdom. The Military Medal (MM) of 1917. Variant GV Type 1.

This medal was awarded to Sergeant J. Evans of the 149th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery for acts of bravery in 1917, during World War I.

The Military Medal was instituted in 1916 and was awarded to members of the British Army below officer rank for “acts of bravery and devotion to duty under enemy fire”. During World War I, 115,600 MM were awarded.

British medal made of silver. On the obverse is George V in Field Marshal’s uniform and the text “GEORGIVS V BRITT: OMN: REX ET IND: IMP”. On the reverse there is the Royal Cypher “GRV” and the text “For bravery in the field”. The edge reads “L-3589 SJT. J. EVANS. D.149/BDE: RFA”.
