Alchenko Nikolay Karpovich’s story
Alchenko Nikolay Karpovich became a Platoon Commander of the 101st Rifle Regiment of the Recognition Division (4th Bezhitskaya Infantry Division, 69th Army, 1st Belarusian Front). He was Junior Sergeant at the time of the presentation for the award of the Order of Glory of 1st Class.
He was born on June 10, 1925 in the village of Aleksandrovka, Azov district, Rostov region, in a peasant family.
After finishing classes, he worked as a tractor driver at a local collective farm until he was recruited by the army in March 1942.
He fought in the Red Army during the Great Patriotic War since October 1943.
On the night of September 17, 1944, the reconnaissance officer N. K. Kalchenko, as part of a search group, crossed to the left bank of the Vistula River, south of the city of Warsaw, where the explorers were suddenly attacked and they faced the enemy. Having received an order to retire, being himself injured, he saved a seriously wounded companion.
On October 24, 1944, Junior Sergeant Kalchenko Nikolay Karpovich received the Order of Glory from 3rd grade.
On November 9, 1944, while searching for the enemy on the left bank of the Vistula River, near the Gurna settlement (6 km northwest of the city of Sakshow, Poland), the leader of the reconnaissance squadron, N. K. Kalchenko, was the first to enter the trench and throw grenades at the enemy. The capture group killed 8 enemy soldiers and obtained documents containing valuable information about the enemy.
On December 4, 1944, Junior Sergeant Kalchenko Nikolay Karpovich was rewarded with the Order of Glory of 3rd grade.
On January 29, 1945, when he was advancing in the direction of the city of Frankfurt-on-Oder, the Recognition Squadron under the command of N. K. Kalchenko was the first to enter the enemy’s position. He personally killed 3 enemy soldiers.
In the battle of February 5, by rejecting an enemy counterattack, N. K. Kalchenko killed 10 enemy soldiers.
On March 23, 1945, Sgt. Kalchenko Nikolay Karpovich received the Order of Glory of the 2nd Class.
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of February 27, 1958, the Order of Glory of 3rd degree was reordered by order of December 4, 1944 to the Order of Glory of 1st degree and Kalchenko Nikolay Karpovich became the holder of the Order of Glory.
After the demobilization in 1945, N. K. Kalchenko returned to his homeland and lived in the city of Bataysk, Rostov region, worked as an excavator driver in the Bataysky transport office of the Rostovsovkhozstroy company.
In 1964 he was awarded the title of “Honored Builder of the RSFSR”.
He died on June 1, 1995 and was buried in the “Red Garden” cemetery in the city of Bataysky.
In the central park of the city of Bataysk, in the memorial “Oath of the generations”, a bust was established for him.
He was awarded the orders of Lenin, the October Revolution and Glory in 3 grades and several medals, including “Medal of Courage” on July 19, 1944.
