On 27 April 1978, the communist-oriented People’s Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) seized power in what became known as the Saur Revolution.
The new regime attempted to radically transform Afghan society through land reform, literacy campaigns, secularisation measures and changes to certain traditional social structures.
In December 1979, the Soviet Union intervened militarily in Afghanistan. Soviet special forces stormed the presidential palace and killed Afghan President Hafizullah Amin, who was replaced by Babrak Karmal.
This intervention marked the beginning of a new phase of the Soviet-Afghan War (1979–1989), during which the Afghan government received extensive political and military support from the Soviet Union.
