Germany, Third Reich. German SA Dagger, Model 1933 (Sturmabteilung Dienstdolch M33).
The handle is made of wood with the SA symbol at the top and the Third Reich eagle in the center. The guard and top are nickel-plated.
The blade is also nickel-plated and bears the characteristic inscription «ALLES FÜR DEUTSCHLAND» («All for Germany») in the center. On the reverse, the marking «RZM M7/19 1938» refers to the manufacturer, Edward Wüsthof Dreizackwerk of Solingen, and the year of manufacture.
The metal scabbard retains much of its original brown color.
The Sturmabteilung (SA), also known as the «Brownshirts,» was established in 1921 as the original paramilitary wing of the Nazi Party (NSDAP). It was mainly composed of World War I veterans and members of the Freikorps, German volunteer military or paramilitary units. The SA’s primary role was to provide security at Nazi rallies and gatherings. They played a key role in Adolf Hitler’s rise to power. The organization was co-founded by Hitler and Ernst Röhm, who later became its leader. However, in 1934, Hitler ordered a purge of the SA during an event that became known as «Operation Hummingbird» or the «Night of the Long Knives.» Like most branches of the NSDAP, the SA wore uniforms and carried paramilitary daggers, with an official SA dagger introduced in 1933.
