Artillery Officer’s Sabre, Model 1862, Variation 1934
Hilt: Made of brass, the hilt features a full backstrap and a guard with branches extending from a shell guard, accompanied by a knuckle bow and a quillon shaped like a rosette. All details, including the ferrule, are finely chiselled, showing meticulous attention to metalwork. The grip, with a pronounced outer curve, is covered in leather and wire-wrapped for better handling. On the front, the emblem of the Artillery is visible, which in this case features a flaming bomb instead of the traditional crossed cannons.
Blade: Curved in shape, the blade has a fuller along the inner side, an edge on the outer side, and sharpened at the tip. On the first third of the blade, the maker’s inscription is acid-etched.
Scabbard: Made of iron, it is fitted with one band and a ring for suspension.
Inscription: «FABRICA DE TOLEDO» and the artillery crest, with crossed cannons and a mural crown.
Regulated by Royal Order dated June 17, 1862, this sabre became the traditional weapon of the Spanish Artillery, remaining in service until 1943. As of July 2, 1934, and by order of the Presidency of the Republic, the historic crossed cannons over a stack of projectiles were removed from the guards of Artillery officers and replaced by the symbol of the flaming bomb, as seen on this piece. This sabre was only used from 1934 until the end of the Spanish Civil War.
Total length: 94 cm. Length without scabbard: 93 cm. Blade length: 77.5 cm.
