Austria-Hungary. Sturmesser M1917 Combat Knife, First World War
The Sturmesser M1917 combat knife (German: Sturmesser M1917) was adopted by the Austro-Hungarian Army during the First World War as a weapon intended for close-quarters combat, particularly during trench warfare and assault operations.
Although combat knives had already been used by troops of the Austro-Hungarian Empire since the beginning of the war, it was not until 1917 that the Sturmesser M1917 was officially standardized.
This example bears the «MA» maker’s mark of Magyar Acélárugyár Rt. (Hungarian Steel Products Factory Ltd.), located in Hungary. It features a wooden grip, an oval steel crossguard, and a steel scabbard.
