Austria. Austro-Hungarian Empire: Iron Cross of Merit.
The medal was established in 1916 as the Austrian equivalent of the German Iron Cross.
It was awarded uncrowned to privates and non-commissioned officers (like this example) and crowned to officers.
First issue, made of iron (zinc was used to produce later examples, as iron was reserved for wartime needs)
