Austria. Military Merit Medal. Signum Laudis.
The Military Merit Medal (German: Militär-Verdienstmedaille; Hungarian: Katonai Érdemérem; Croatian: Vojna medalja za zasluge) was a major decoration of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
It was instituted on March 12, 1890, by Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria to reward meritorious service to the armed forces. Over time, the medal acquired several classes and distinctions to differentiate the degree of merit and the circumstances of its award (peacetime or wartime).
The name by which it is commonly known, “Signum Laudis,” comes from the Latin inscription engraved on the reverse of the medal and literally means “sign of praise” or “distinction of commendation.”
