Belgium. Yser Medal. Instituted in 1918. World War I Medal. The Yser Medal (Flemish: Medaille van de IJzer) was a Belgian military campaign medal created by royal decree on October 18, 1918 and awarded to those who, between October 17 and 31, 1914, were part of the Belgian Army fighting along the Yser which halted the German advance led by General Erich von Falkenhayn, at the cost of over 60,000 soldiers killed or wounded in the process, more than a third of the total Belgian Army strength at the time.
