The National Order of the Southern Cross (Ordem Nacional do Cruzeiro do Sul) is the highest honor bestowed by Brazil upon foreign citizens, both civilian and military, in recognition of their merits and services to the country. It was created in 1822 by Emperor Pedro I on the occasion of Brazil’s independence and his coronation, and was later reinstated in 1932. This decoration is intended to honor distinguished international figures and is awarded by presidential decree. The order is structured in several hierarchical grades: Grand Collar—the highest category—Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer, and Knight.
The emblem of the order consists of a five-pointed star enamelled in white and edged in gold, surrounded by tobacco and coffee leaves, traditional symbols of Brazil. The Southern Cross constellation is depicted in the center.
The President of Brazil serves as Grand Master of the order, while the Minister of Foreign Affairs holds the position of Chancellor. This distinction is typically awarded to heads of state, diplomats, and other prominent international figures as a token of recognition and gratitude from the Brazilian government.
