20 × 110 Hispano HS 404/804 Mle 1938.
Manufactured by Fabrique Fédérale de Munitions, Altdorf, Switzerland.
Initially, Hispano-Suiza manufactured the 20 × 110 mm Oerlikon S cannon under licence. This was an open-bolt weapon that could not be synchronized to fire through an aircraft’s propeller. To overcome this limitation, Marc Birkigt mounted the cannon between the two cylinder banks of the V12 engine, allowing it to fire through the propeller hub.
Between 1935 and 1936, Birkigt developed the HS 404, a new 20 × 110 mm cannon using a different cartridge that was not interchangeable with the Oerlikon round. Its conventional operating system made propeller synchronization possible while also providing a higher rate of fire.
Hispano-Suiza, renowned for its luxury automobiles and aircraft engines, also gained an outstanding reputation for manufacturing this excellent aircraft cannon. Following the Spanish Civil War, its Spanish division was nationalised and became Pegaso.
