It was one of the first insignias of the Croatian Militias during the War of Independence or Patriotic War.
The Croatian coat of arms begins with a white field, similar to the Independent State of Croatia (Nezavisna Država Hrvatska) from 1941 to 1945.
The coat of arms with the first white field was officially adopted and used on July 25, 1990.
It was occasionally used along with the variant of the first red field until December 21, 1990, when the final coat of arms with the crown of five shields was adopted.
