Croatia. Croatian Airlines metal wings. Model 1991.
The airline was founded in June 1991 without aircraft and with limited economic prospects. Later in 1991, Croatia Airlines signed an agreement with Adria Airways allowing it to lease a McDonnell Douglas MD-82 to begin domestic flights between Zagreb and Split. Croatia Airlines acquired three Boeing 737-200 from Lufthansa and became a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). As the flag carrier of newly independent Croatia, the airline launched its first international flight on April 5, 1992, from Zagreb to Frankfurt.
In 1993, two new ATR 42-300 and two more 737-200 joined the fleet, representative offices were opened in several European cities, and the company acquired the travel agency Obzor to organize travel packages for groups and individuals. In 1994, Croatia Airlines welcomed its one-millionth passenger. That same year, Pope John Paul II flew with the airline on a trip to Croatia.
In 1995, another ATR 42 was added, marking the two-millionth passenger. In 1996, Croatia Airlines became the first airline to fly to Sarajevo after the Bosnian War. In 1997, the airline received its first Airbus A320, named Rijeka. In 1998, another new type of aircraft arrived, the first Airbus A319, which joined the fleet and was named Zadar. That same year, Croatia Airlines became a member of the Association of European Airlines (AEA). By 1999, one more A319 and A320 had joined, and Croatia Airlines began selling the 737-200s from its fleet.
