Patriarchal Cross of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.
Varnished metal. Gold-plated brass chain. 20th century. Size 75 x 50 mm.
The Patriarchal Cross of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem is one of the most emblematic symbols of this ancient religious and military order. The Order of the Holy Sepulchre was founded to protect Christian holy sites in the Holy Land, particularly the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.
The cross has a «pattée» design (with arms that widen towards the tips). In some versions, the arms of the cross are interspersed with the four points representing the four main Christian historical regions linked to the order: Jerusalem, Rome, Constantinople, and Antioch.
The color and style of the cross may also differ depending on the branch of the order, but it is generally strongly associated with the color red, symbolizing the sacrifice of Christ.
