East Germany DDR. Commemorative Insignia of the International Brigades, 1936-1956
Commemorative insignia produced in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) in 1956, marking the 20th anniversary of the beginning of the Spanish Civil War. The piece forms part of the GDR’s public commemorations of former International Brigade (Interbrigadisten) veterans, particularly the German volunteers who had fought alongside the Spanish Republic.
The upper section displays the red-yellow-purple tricolour flag of the Second Spanish Republic, enamelled in its original colours, with the characteristic three-pointed star of the International Brigades in the centre. Below it is the inscription “Für Spaniens Freiheit”, meaning “For the Freedom of Spain”, together with the dates 1936-1939, corresponding to the period of the Spanish Civil War.
