Spain. Spanish plug bayonet made from an M1893 bayonet.
This type of bayonet is known by many names, such as hunting bayonet, knife bayonet, plug bayonet, or finishing dagger, although in the catalogs of the National Factory of Toledo from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, they were referred to as “hunting knives”.
The use of hunting knives dates back to the 18th century for big game hunting, but their variants, the plug bayonets, were also used militarily with arquebuses and hunting rifles. Among the latter were the so-called arquebus swords, forged by master swordsmiths either from new models or by converting swords or long bayonets into socket bayonets, pieces often found among the nobility and the royal court.
This example dates from the late 19th century and was made from the Spanish Model 1893 bayonet.
