Spain. Ammunition box for the Alfa machine gun belts.
The box was used to transport the reels with the ammunition belts.
It was used in the Alfa 44 and 55 machine guns.
The Alfa M44 was a Spanish machine gun developed during World War II. At that time, machine gun supplies were scarce, and there were no external suppliers. Non-combatant nations faced the impossibility of supplying belligerent nations, as they were occupied with meeting their own production needs during the war. It complemented the light machine gun ZB-26 and replaced the obsolete Hotchkiss M1914. Originally chambered for the 7.92 x 57 mm Mauser caliber, in 1955 an updated version chambered for the 7.62 x 51 mm NATO caliber was introduced, which was later delivered to Spanish troops, sometimes referred to as the M55. In addition to Spain, the M44 was also notably used by Egypt, which had standardized the 7.92 x 57 mm Mauser caliber. Also, in the early 1960s, the government of Congo purchased a batch of weapons from Spain, including Alfa machine guns, to combat Simba.
