The Order of Charles III, instituted on September 19, 1771, is the highest Spanish civil decoration. It was established by Charles III of Spain to reward citizens for merit and services rendered to the Crown and to Spain.
With the motto “Virtuti et Merito” (“For virtue and merit”), it is awarded to both civilians and military personnel for their distinguished service and outstanding career.
