The 1st Cavalry Division, a unit of the National Army during the Spanish Civil War created in November 1937, used the cross of Santiago and the historical motto «Santiago y cierra España». This division participated in the siege of Madrid, moved to stop the Republican offensive in Teruel, making the last cavalry charge in the National Army counteroffensive. It fought in the following Aragon Campaign, Battle of the Ebro and Catalonia Offensive.
