Spain. Public Works Machete or Public Works Guard Machete. First model, around 1850.
Guard: Forged from solid brass, with the pommel sculpted in the shape of a lion’s head and the rest of the handle decorated with scales. The crossguard features a cross of straight quillons, with finely chiseled tips. In the center of the crossguard’s diamond shape, the initials «OP» are engraved, corresponding to Public Works.
Blade: Wide and strong, with a 5 cm ricasso, the blade has rounded ridges and features an interior false edge, while the cutting edge extends along the rest of the blade. Its design includes a gentle curve along the inner spine, widening toward a scimitar-style point. This design not only provides a distinctive aesthetic but also ensures an ideal balance during use, allowing for precise placement of the center of gravity for the user.
Marking on the blade: FABca de Toledo and serial number 875.
Total length: 56.7 cm.
Blade length: 42.2 cm.
