Spain. National Militia Artillery Machete, 19th Century
The National Militia (Milicia Nacional) was a liberal citizen militia created to defend Spain’s constitutional system. It did not exist continuously, but was repeatedly dissolved and re-established according to the political orientation of successive governments.
In the larger cities, the Militia maintained artillery units. These artillery companies or batteries were composed of citizens with technical expertise, many of whom were former soldiers, craftsmen, or workers associated with arsenals and foundries. They generally operated artillery pieces supplied by the State or local municipalities.
This artillery machete is a particularly rare item, and its exact classification remains a matter of debate among collectors. One theory dates it to the 1834–1843 period, during the regencies of Maria Christina and Espartero, when the National Militia became firmly established and played an increasingly important role. Another attributes it to the Progressive Biennium (1854–1856), when the Militia was briefly restored, which would explain the limited number of examples produced.
Despite these differing interpretations, collectors generally agree that it is a National Militia Artillery Machete, as it displays several distinctive features that clearly differentiate it from the standard Spanish Army Artillery and Engineers Trooper’s Machete.
