Spain. “Caldas de Estrach” Straight Razor, Collectivized by the CNT, 1936
Barber’s razor for shaving manufactured by the Caldas de Estrach company, formerly and later known as the Filarmonica Monserrat, established in the town of Caldes d’Estrac (Barcelona), and associated with the period of industrial collectivization during the Spanish Civil War. The piece retains cardboard box decorated in red and black, colours associated with the Confederación Nacional del Trabajo (CNT). The blade bears the markings “CALDAS DE ESTRACH ESPAÑA” and “14 CNT”, the latter combining the model reference with the initials of the anarchist trade union. Similar examples also retain the “14” marking as an identification of the razor type.
The razor measures 16.6 cm in overall length, with a 7.4 cm blade, while the box measures 17 cm in length. The blade shows areas of oxidation and could be restored.
