France. French M1886/15 bayonet for the Lebel
The bayonet for the Lebel Model 1886 was modified in 1915 to meet the needs of the French Army in the First World War, creating the Épée-Baïonnette Modèle 1886 Modifié 1915 (Sword Bayonet Model 1886 Modified 1915). One of the main changes was the removal of the hook.
This Lebel bayonet, known as «Rosalie» among the troops, along with its corresponding rifle, was widely used during the First World War but was also used by Republican troops in the Spanish Civil War and by French troops in 1940 during the Second World War.
This example has the marking «C&P» on the blade, corresponding to a private company that manufactured parts of Lebel bayonets during the First World War. On the grip there are two markings with the letter «F» from the Manufacture d’Armes St. Etienne (MAS) factory and the serial number «47008». It has several acceptance marks in different parts of the grip. The blade has the characteristic cruciform shape.
