France. Napoleonic Light Cavalry Saber of the First French Empire, 1804–1815
This saber belonged to an officer of the French Imperial Light Cavalry under Napoleon. Several cavalry branches carried this type of saber, including the Hussars, Chasseurs à Cheval (Mounted Chasseurs), Lancers, and even the Imperial Guard; examples with an all-metal scabbard such as this one are known from the latter.
The hilt features a wooden grip with brass mounts, while the steel blade is decorated with floral motifs and a blued background, ornamental features characteristic of French Imperial officers’ sabers.
The sabercomes from a manor house near Zaragoza, where, according to its former owners, it had remained for several generations. It is therefore possible that it was captured during the Peninsular War (1808–1814), although this provenance cannot be documented with certainty.
