France. Combatant’s Cross. 1960s.
Croix du combattant.
It was established on 28 June 1930 to recognize veterans of the First World War.
The decoration is awarded to those who fought in direct combat for France. Over time, eligibility was extended to veterans of the Second World War and later armed conflicts.
The obverse features the effigy of the French Republic wearing an Adrian helmet (the standard French helmet of the First World War), surrounded by a wreath of laurel leaves. Around the edge appears the inscription «RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE».
It was designed by M. Doumenc, a First World War veteran.
This example was awarded to a veteran of the French colonial wars in Algeria and Indochina.
