France. French Model 1854 Sabre for Imperial Guard NCO, Second Empire
French sabre from the period of the Second French Empire (1852–1870). It bears the marking “Manceaux” on the lower part of the guard, referring to the sword manufacturer based in Paris. The blade is unmarked and, based on its characteristics, was likely manufactured in Solingen.
The brass hilt is marked “29.2.G”, indicating its assignment to an Imperial Guard unit. These sabres were issued exclusively to non-commissioned officers of the Guard infantry regiments:
The metal scabbard fits perfectly, a variant that became widespread during the Second Empire, replacing the earlier leather scabbards.
Overall length: 97.5 cm
Length without scabbard: 89 cm
Blade length: 75 cm
This original 19th-century French sabre is an evolution of the Model 1821.
