German commemorative medal struck in 1908 to mark the centenary of the 88th Hesse-Nassau Infantry Regiment (2. Nassauisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 88), a Prussian Army unit whose origins date back to 1808, during the Napoleonic Wars.
The regiment was historically associated with the former Duchy of Nassau, whose territory became part of Prussia following the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, and was subsequently incorporated into the province of Hesse-Nassau. The unit took part in several nineteenth-century military campaigns, including the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871.
The medal was produced to commemorate the regiment’s hundred-year history (1808-1908) and reflects the military traditions and esprit de corps of the Imperial German Army.
Commemorative medals of this kind were commonly distributed to serving and former members of the regiment, as well as individuals associated with the unit, during anniversary celebrations.
