Germany, Third Reich. Luftwaffe Observer Pilot Watch B-Uhr, Model Fl.23883, Type B, manufactured by Laco
The Beobachtungsuhr (Observer Watch), also known as B-Uhr, was used by the German Luftwaffe (Air Force) during World War II, primarily by navigators and observers aboard bomber and reconnaissance aircraft. Its main function was to aid in precise navigation, allowing synchronized timing between crews and enabling astronomical or time-based coordinate calculation. The Reich Air Ministry classified it under the number «FL 23883», which referred to the category of “navigation instruments.”
This is a large-sized watch, with a 55 mm case diameter, designed for easy readability under adverse conditions. It is a Type B model (Baumuster B), introduced in 1941, featuring a more complex design with an outer minute track (5 to 55) and an inner hour track (1 to 12).
Five manufacturers were authorized to produce these watches under strict military specifications: A. Lange & Söhne, Laco (Lacher & Co), Stowa, Wempe, and IWC (International Watch Company, Switzerland). Though design was standardized, each firm introduced subtle differences in movement and construction. All shared the technical standards set by the Reichsluftfahrtministerium (Reich Air Ministry) in 1935. This specific example was manufactured by Lacher & Co. (Laco) between 1941 and 1945.
