Germany Third Reich. Set of medals and documents belonging to a Senior Lance Corporal (Obergefreiter) of the Wehrmacht, 1941–1943
From the documents, we know that this German soldier took part in Operation Barbarossa (his Soldbuch lists the Eastern Front Medal, though it is no longer preserved) as part of the Reconnaissance Unit (Aufklärungsabteilung A.A) of the 268th Infantry Division. In July 1941, he held the rank of Oberreiter (Senior Rider). For his actions in combat, he was awarded the Infantry Assault Badge that same year. In March 1942, he was awarded with the Iron Cross 2nd Class and was promoted to Gefreiter (Lance Corporal). In September of the same year, he was wounded and received the Black Wound Badge. He returned to the front and was promoted to Obergefreiter (Senior Lance Corporal) in January 1943. He was seriously wounded again in December of that year and received the Silver Wound Badge.
