Hungary. Transylvania Liberation Medal 1940. Medal created during the regency of Admiral Miklós Horthy. The medal was instituted on October 1, 1940, to commemorate the return of part of Transylvania to Hungary. At the end of World War I, Hungary lost almost three-quarters of its territory, including Transylvania. By mid-1940, under pressure from the Soviet Union and Bulgaria on Romania, Hungary made a claim on Transylvania.
