Military medal of the Republic of Indonesia, known as the Satyalancana Gerakan Operasi Militer III (G.O.M. III), awarded in recognition of participation in military operations against the self-proclaimed Republic of South Maluku (Republik Maluku Selatan, RMS) in 1950.
The decoration features a circular shape with a scalloped or wavy edge, bearing the central inscription G.O.M. III, surrounded by a vegetal arrangement of laurel branches and rice stalks, traditional elements of Indonesian symbolism.
The medal is suspended from a ribbon with vertical red and yellow stripes, associated with this decoration.
The initials G.O.M. stand for Gerakan Operasi Militer, an Indonesian expression referring to military operations. The Roman numeral III identifies the third campaign recognized within this series of decorations.
The historical background of this medal lies in the early years of Indonesian independence. Following the proclamation of the Republic of South Maluku in April 1950, the Indonesian government launched a military campaign to regain control of the archipelago.
The operations included an offensive against the island of Ambon, one of the principal centres of the separatist movement. The city of Ambon fell to Indonesian forces in November 1950, although resistance subsequently continued in other areas.
The Satyalancana G.O.M. III represents a historical record of the military conflicts that accompanied Indonesia’s territorial consolidation following independence.
