Military campaign medal of the Republic of Indonesia, known as the Satyalancana Gerakan Operasi Militer VI (G.O.M. VI), belonging to a series of decorations established to recognize the participation of Indonesian armed forces personnel in military operations against internal rebellions during the early years following the country’s independence.
This decoration is associated with military operations against the Darul Islam movement in Central Java (Jawa Tengah) during the 1950s.
The medal features a circular shape with a scalloped or wavy edge, characteristic of this series of Indonesian decorations. The centre bears the inscription G.O.M. VI, surrounded by a wreath of vegetal motifs including rice stalks and cotton branches, traditional elements of Indonesian national symbolism.
The reverse bears the inscription “REPUBLIK INDONESIA”, identifying the Republic of Indonesia as the awarding authority.
The initials G.O.M. stand for Gerakan Operasi Militer (Military Operations), while the Roman numeral VI identifies the sixth campaign recognized within this series of medals.
The historical background of this decoration lies in the period of consolidation following Indonesian independence, when the central government faced several insurgent and separatist movements.
Among these was the Darul Islam/Tentara Islam Indonesia (DI/TII) movement, which sought to establish an Islamic state and conducted a prolonged armed insurgency in several regions of the archipelago, particularly West Java, Central Java, Aceh and South Sulawesi.
In Central Java, insurgent activity involved armed groups opposing the authority of the Republic. Government forces carried out military operations to regain control of affected areas and dismantle these organizations.
The Satyalancana G.O.M. VI belongs to the series of campaign medals intended to recognize military service during the internal conflicts accompanying the formation and consolidation of the Republic of Indonesia.
