The 13th Division, also known as the Black Hand. 1, was a Division of the rebel side that fought in the Spanish Civil War. Its chief during the civil war was the Cavalry Brigadier General Fernando Barrón Ortiz, a veteran of the Rif Wars. At the end of the war it served as the basis for the creation of the Brunete Armored Division, on August 20, 1943.1
Considered an elite military unit, perhaps the most prestigious and also the one with the most casualties in the Francoist Army: 953 chiefs and officers (of which 136 dead) and 25,517 among the troops (3,570 dead). For example, during the Battle of Brunete, there were 70% casualties among its officers and more than 60% among its troops, despite which it continued fighting until it was relieved.
