Iran. Persia. Bayonet for the Persian Mauser Model 98/29 8mm rifle.
Persia (Iran) reportedly obtained Model 98/29 rifles from the Czechoslovak Republic between 1930 and 1938, before the German occupation interrupted supplies.
The first shipments of bayonets to Persia (Iran) consisted of Czechoslovak Army VZ-23 bayonets, obtained from Army stores. Once the supply of good VZ-23 bayonets was exhausted, Zbrojovka Brno manufactured new M98/29 bayonets to meet remaining export orders.
The old Czechoslovak Army VZ-23 bayonets exported to Persia (Iran) had a blade profile with the thread facing up and a scabbard with the same nut as the Czech VZ-22 bayonet. Newly manufactured Model 98/29 bayonets exported to Persia (like this example) had blades with a conventional downward cutting profile and scabbard with a wire handle.
It features the crown of the Pahlavi dynasty on the pommel. The serial number is 23317 23317
Many books refer to this bayonet as the VZ–23 «Long». However, the Czechoslovak designation was VZ–23. Since this was the only Czechoslovak bayonet officially designated as the VZ–23, the suffix «Long» is superfluous.
