Japan. Sino-Japanese War Medal,1894–1895
The Sino-Japanese War Medal of 1894–1895 was established by an Imperial Edict signed by the Emperor on October 8, 1895.
The material used for its production was bronze from captured Chinese cannons. Between July and August of that year, 53 cannons were sent to the Osaka Mint, where they were melted down to produce approximately 105,000 medals.
At the center of the reverse appears the inscription 従軍記章, meaning “War Medal,” while the outer rim reads 明治二十七八年, referring to the “27th–28th years of the Meiji era” (1894–1895).
Comes with its original lacquered wooden case.
