Japan. Wooden Identification Tag for Field Equipment of Lieutenant Tamai.
During the Second World War, the Imperial Japanese Army used wooden tablets as identification tags. These pieces served various purposes: they could replace soldiers’ metal dog tags near the end of the war, identify the owner of field equipment, act as good-luck charms, or simply serve as serial numbers for military gear.
This example bears the inscription “Lieutenant Tamai” (玉井中尉) in red characters on a black background on one side, and in black characters on a yellow background on the other. It was most likely used to identify the field equipment belonging to this officer.
