Japan. Send-Off Banner or Hinomaru Shussei Nobori from World War II.
When Japanese men left for military service, community organizations such as the local branch of the Imperial Reservists Association (Teikoku Zaigo Gunjinkai) and the Greater Japan National Defense Women’s Association (Dai Nippon Kokubo Fujinkai) would organize various celebrations culminating in send-off parades to wish the troops well as they marched to local train stations or ports. These send-off ceremonies were called Sokokai . Participants in the parades carried banners with the names of the recruits. The Japanese term for banner is Nobori.
At the top in orange is «shuku», translated as «congratulations». The two flags are the national flag and the flag of the Army of the Rising Sun. The two upper kanji in black correspond to «nyu-ei» which means «entry into military service». The letters in the center correspond to the name of the person in front, the ones on the sides correspond to messages of support or the name of friends, family and/or coworkers.
It has some holes at the bottom.
