Lapel badge of the Generalitat of Catalonia from the Second Republic and the Spanish Civil War.
Gilded enameled badge with the four red stripes, worn by deputies, officials, or workers of the Generalitat of Catalonia during the 1930s.
The Generalitat of Catalonia during the Spanish Second Republic (1931–1939) was the self-government institution of Catalonia, restored after three centuries of abolition and intermittent restoration of Catalan institutions. During this period, the Generalitat, led first by Francesc Macià and later by Lluís Companys, promoted political, educational, and social reforms, as well as Catalan autonomy recognized in the 1932 Statute, which granted competencies in justice, education, culture, and public security within the region.
With the outbreak of the Civil War (1936–1939), the Generalitat became a key actor in defending Republican territory, coordinating militias, supporting collectivizations, and managing resources in the face of Francoist military occupation in other areas. Its influence was concentrated particularly in Catalonia, where it acted as a civil authority and organizer of basic services, though it had to share power with political parties, unions, and militias. After the fall of Catalonia in 1939, the Generalitat was suppressed by the Franco regime, remaining in exile until its formal restoration in 1977.
