Norway. German M40 Helmet reissued by the Norwegian Army
During World War II, in April 1940, Germany invaded Norway and remained in the country until May 1945. After the war, the Norwegian Army reorganized its forces and equipped them with its own material, British aid, and captured German equipment.
This example is an original German M40 helmet from World War II, marked «Q68» referring to the manufacturer Quist of Esslingen and size 68, and «5555» referring to the production lot. The liner is an M31 model made of brown leather in 1938 by Metall Lederverarbeitung (Werner Zahn) of Berlin. The chinstrap attachment is the rectangular type used until 1938.
The green paint, both inside and out, was applied after the war by the Norwegian Army starting in 1946. The decals depict a crowned lion holding an axe, a symbol used by the Norwegian Armed Forces.
