Paper currency. City Hall of Barcelona. 50 cents. May 13, 1937. Spanish Civil War.
During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), paper currency played an important role in the economy of both the Republican and Nationalist sides. On both sides, governments and municipalities issued bills that were used as a form of currency to finance the war and facilitate the exchange of goods and services, although with a significant difference in terms of stability and value. The majority of the paper currency issued by municipalities was in the Republican zone.
