Portugal. Medallion of the Order of Queen Saint Elizabeth. Gilt silver and enamels. It was created by King John VI of Portugal on November 4, 1801, in honor of Saint Elizabeth of Portugal, consort of King Dioniosio I of Portugal. John VI makes his wife, Carlota Joaquina of Spain, the first Grand Master of the Order. After the proclamation of the Portuguese Republic, the order continued to be granted by the exiled King Manuel II of Portugal, who gave it to his wife, Augusta Victoria. After her death, both the Queen and the Queen Mother continued to wear the insignia of Grand Masters of the order. In 1986 Eduarzo Pío, Duke of Braganza, re-establishes the order as a dynastic order of the Portuguese royal family. Don Eduardo becomes sovereign of the order, investing his wife as Grand Master of it. This specimen corresponds to the second half of the 20th century. Portuguese order. Portugal.
