United Kingdom. War Medal 1939–1945 with Mention
The War Medal 1939–1945 was instituted by the United Kingdom on 16 August 1945 to recognize service by members of the British Commonwealth armed forces and Merchant Navy during the Second World War.
The medal was awarded to Commonwealth citizens who completed at least 28 days of full-time service between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945, regardless of the theatre in which they served.
This example bears a Mention in Despatches, represented by a bronze oak leaf emblem worn on the ribbon. This distinction recognized acts of gallantry, leadership, or distinguished service in operations against the enemy and was one of the most respected forms of individual recognition within the British armed forces.
The presence of the oak leaf signifies that the recipient was officially mentioned in military reports for noteworthy service during the war.
