The Polisario Front (Popular Front for the Liberation of Saguia el-Hamra and Río de Oro) is a political and military movement founded in 1973 with the goal of achieving the independence of Western Sahara, then under Spanish colonial rule. Following Spain’s withdrawal in 1975 and the Madrid Accords, Morocco and Mauritania occupied the territory, triggering an armed conflict. The Polisario proclaimed the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) in 1976 and, with the support of Algeria, launched a war against Morocco and Mauritania; the latter withdrew in 1979, but Morocco maintained control over most of the territory.
