Second Spanish Republic. Catalonia Assault Guards Badge, 1934
Identification badge of the Security and Assault Corps, popularly known as the Assault Guards, intended for personnel of the force serving under the Government of Catalonia (Generalitat de Catalunya) during the Second Spanish Republic.
By a decree of the Presidency of the Republic dated 15 November 1933, responsibility for the services of the Investigation and Surveillance Corps and the Security Corps was transferred to the Generalitat, as part of the devolution of police powers under the 1932 Statute of Autonomy. The decree stipulated that Security Corps personnel serving the Generalitat would retain the same uniform, rank insignia and identifying badges as the rest of the corps, while allowing the Catalan government to create its own emblem to be added to the uniform.
This arrangement ceased to apply on 24 November 1934, when, following the events of October and the failed proclamation of the Catalan State, the police and public-order services once again came under the authority of the Government of the Republic.
The badge consists of an enamelled insignia featuring the coat of arms of Catalonia at its centre. The reverse bears the manufacturer’s mark “Castells Barcelona” and serial number 424.
