The Order of Brotherhood and Unity was an award established in 1943 by the Yugoslav government during the Second World War. It was created to honor individuals and organizations that promoted solidarity among the different peoples and nationalities of Yugoslavia. This order reflected one of the core principles of the partisan movement led by Josip Broz Tito: multiethnic unity as the foundation of the new socialist state.
The decoration symbolized the ideal of overcoming ethnic and historical divisions to build an egalitarian federation, and it was awarded both for merit in the fight against fascism and for contributions to peaceful coexistence among the diverse Yugoslav communities.
In 1961, the two existing classes were renamed:
Order of Brotherhood and Unity with Silver Wreath (2nd Class)
Yugoslav medal issued before 1992.
