The 6th SAI was established on January 1, 1962, in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape.
Bush War, Namibia.
The battalion entered combat in 1970. The 6th SAI participated in Operation Protea and Operation Daisy in Angola.
The Unit participated in the suppression of the Grahamstown riots of 1984 to assist the South African Police, who failed to contain the situation.
Since then, the battalion has become an air assault infantry unit, specifically trained to deploy by helicopters.
