Soviet Union (USSR). “Excellent Antiaircraft Gunner” Badge, 1950s
The “Excellent Antiaircraft Gunner” badge (Russian: Отличный зенитчик) was instituted on 21 May 1942 as part of a series of proficiency insignia awarded to Red Army privates and NCOs during the Great Patriotic War.
Badge produced in the 1950s.
It was bestowed upon antiaircraft-artillery personnel who exhibited high firing accuracy, rapid target acquisition and tracking of enemy aircraft, flawless gun maintenance, strict discipline, and personal bravery under fire. The badge both recognised individual merit and promoted professional excellence in a branch vital to safeguarding Soviet airspace.
Made of enamelled metal, the badge features at its top the red star with hammer and sickle. The centre depicts an antiaircraft gun firing skyward with two crossed light sources; above is the inscription «Отличный зенитчик» (“Excellent Antiaircraft Gunner”).
