Soviet Union (USSR). Excellent Driver Badge, 1950s
The “Excellent Driver” badge (Russian: Отличный шофёр) was instituted on 8 March 1942 as part of a series of proficiency insignia awarded to Red Army privates and NCOs during the Great Patriotic War.
Badge produced in the 1950s.
It was conferred upon motor-transport personnel who displayed outstanding driving skill, meticulous vehicle maintenance, swift delivery of troops or supplies and evacuation of casualties under enemy fire, strict discipline, and personal courage. The badge both recognised individual merit and encouraged professional excellence in a logistical branch vital to Soviet battlefield mobility.
Made of enamelled metal, the badge features at its top the red star with hammer and sickle. The centre depicts a Soviet truck, above which appears the inscription «Отличный шофёр» (“Excellent Driver”).
