Soviet Union (USSR). “Excellent Mortar Man” Badge, 1943-1945
The “Excellent Mortar Man” badge (Russian: Отличный миномётчик) was instituted on 21 May 1942 as part of a series of proficiency insignia awarded to Red Army privates and NCOs during the Great Patriotic War.
Wartime production model, 1943-1945.
It was bestowed upon mortar-unit personnel who demonstrated accurate and rapid fire, skill in occupying and shifting firing positions under enemy fire, flawless mortar maintenance, strict discipline, and personal bravery. The badge both recognised individual merit and encouraged professional excellence in a support arm crucial to Soviet infantry operations.
Made of enamelled metal, the badge bears at its top the hammer and sickle. The centre depicts a Soviet mortar; above the inscription «Отличный миномётчик» (“Excellent Mortar Man”).
